As you get to know me you’ll learn that I really enjoy talking with people about their faith, and mine. I really like to hear how God uses people to help one another. As a matter of fact, I’m writing a book on that very topic.
So many times in my conversations with other Christians, I’m surprised at how uncomfortable they are with witnessing to others. This is strange for me because I love to talk with strangers and even more, I love to talk about all the cool things God has done in my life. I think that sometimes people get caught up in the formality of what witnessing is. You know, like there is a formula they have to follow and if they don’t stay on script they could mess things up. Well, my advice to these people is to throw away the script.
When I talk to others about my relationship with God, I’m not trying to sell them on anything. I’m just excited to share the good things He has done for me. Every conversation I have is different because there are countless times I can list where God has been there for me. My point is this, don’t try to “sell” someone on the concept of Christ. Let them “see” the results of Christ in your life.
We can be witnesses of our God in so many different ways. One of the most powerful things that drew me to our Lord was seeing the positive influence He had in the lives of other people. There were certain people in my life where the presence of God was apparent even in the worse of times. I was drawn to this like a moth to a flame. Sure, the words people had spoken to me about God had a good influence on me, but to “witness” the actual effect He had on their lives was extremely powerful. I wanted what they had.
God wants us to life happy and full lives. When we honor Him by doing this, others see it and like me, are drawn to this happiness. The best witnessing tool is the way we live our lives, not just the words we have to say.
Please don’t get me wrong, talking about God and how wonderful He is is awesome and I will continue to do it and will always enjoy hearing about his greatness from other people.
Just remember that after the words are said, the conversation isn’t over. People will watch you and see how you live your life. They will want to see evidence of the wonderful things God has done and is currently doing in your life. Without the actions to back up your words, your words are just that, words.
As for what to say in the midst of a conversation about God, just be yourself. Say a little prayer and ask God to use you for His glory. When I do this sometimes I’m amazed at the words He gives me to share.
If you want to be a powerful witness for God, “Don’t worry, be happy!”
- Blessings
